CALLING ALL CHILDREN TO THE MARDI GRAS

Calling all children! Calling all children around the world!
Calling all children! Calling all children to the Mardi Gras!

Everybody look, everybody wait, they're comin' to town for a Carnival date.
Flying on jets, rolling on skates, over the mountains, across the sand,
All the little children come from every land, every land.

Calling all children! Calling all children around the world!
Calling all children! Calling all children to the Mardi Gras!

Join the party now, come and celebrate. Parades are coming soon so you'd better not wait.
No matter where you live, no matter where you are, we're waiting on you so we can start the band.
Come and join the children from every land, every land.

Calling all children. Calling all children around the world.
Calling all children. Calling all children to the Mardi Gras.

I COULDN'T BELIEVE WHAT I SAW

I couldn't believe what I saw. I couldn't believe what I saw.
I had to rub my eyes and I had to look twice. I couldn't believe what I saw.

I saw dogs and cats wearing dresses and hats. I couldn't believe what I saw
And a clown with big feet dancing right in the street. I couldn't believe what I saw.

I couldn't believe what I saw. I couldn't believe what I saw.
I had to rub my eyes and I had to look twice. I couldn't believe what I saw.

I saw a man with a ruby in his tummy play a flute. I couldn't believe what I saw.
And a little bitty baby in a funny bunny suit. I couldn't believe what I saw.

No...I couldn't believe what I saw. I couldn't believe what I saw.
I had to rub my eyes and I had to look twice. I couldn't believe what I saw.

CHICKA WAH-WAH

Chicka wah-wah ohhh, chicka wah-wah ohhh,
Chicka wah-wah ohhh, chicka wah-wah sing it the happy way.
Chicka wah-wah ohhh, chicka wah-wah ohhh,
Chicka wah-wah ohhh, chicka wah-wah sing it the happy way.

Sing that way. Sing that happy way. Sing that way. Sing that happy way.

Chicka wah-wah ohhh, chicka wah-wah ohhh,
Chicka wah-wah ohhh, chicka wah-wah sing it the happy way.

And we wait on the neutral ground. Stay awake! Coconut can be found.

Chicka wah-wah ohhh, chicka wah-wah ohhh,
Chicka wah-wah ohhh, chicka wah-wah sing it the happy way.
Chicka wah-wah ohhh, chicka wah-wah ohhh,
Chicka wah-wah ohhh, chicka wah-wah sing it the happy way.

Raise your hands, raise your hands so high. Bring your voice. Shout it to the sky!
Good King Rex, Mighty Zulu too. Pay attention! Got something for you.

Chicka wah-wah ohhh, chicka wah-wah ohhh,
Chicka wah-wah ohhh, chicka wah-wah sing it the happy way.
Chicka wah-wah ohhh, chicka wah-wah ohhh,
Chicka wah-wah ohhh, chicka wah-wah sing it the happy way.
Sing it the happy way. Sing it the happy way.

WE'RE GONNA HAVE A FAIS-DO-DO TONIGHT

Down on the bayou the sun’s gone down and everybody oughta be in bed
But all the lights are on tonight because we’re gonna have a party instead.
If you can’t play music, then you bring some food
It don’t matter just as long as you show,
Cause we’re gonna have a fais-do-do tonight, yeah we’re gonna have a fais-do-do.

We’re gonna have a fais do do tonight, yeah we’re gonna have a fais-do-do
Everybody’s gonna stay up all night long, we’re gonna dance to the Zydeco.
Push back the chairs, roll up the rug, put on a pot o’ gumbo,
Cause we’re gonna have a fais-do-do tonight, yeah we’re gonna have a fais-do-do.

We two-step, we waltz, and we don’t rest because we know the music sounds good.
When the band plays the Cajun jitterbug, I wouldn’t stop my feet if I could.
Allons Dancer! We gonna make noise, they’ll hear us down in Thibodaux
'Cause we’re gonna have a fais-do-do tonight, yeah we’re gonna have a fais-do-do.

UP ON THE LADDER

One step, two steps, three steps more. Out from the attic, out the door.
On to the car, away we go! Out to the place where the parade goes.
When we get to the edge of the street, up on the ladder, feel the beat.

My little sister's got a big, big voice. Up on the ladder, she make big noise.
Shoutin' and yellin' above the band. Throw me somethin' right in my hand.
When we get to the edge of the road, up on the ladder see the show.

Up on the ladder my sister and I, arms are swingin' from side to side.
Throw us something! Throw us something!

One rung, two rungs, three rungs, four. Up on the top see much more.
Everyone knows it won't be long 'til they start playin' that Carnival song.
When we get to the edge of the seat, up on the ladder you feel the beat.

Throw us something! Throw us something!

KING CAKE

There’s a lotta good food people like to eat when they’re watchin’ parades and sittin’ by the street.
Fried chicken and moon pies, gumbo too, you know that it’s hot when they say, “Whoo! Whoo!”
But the king cake, y’all, yeah, the king cake, y’all, that’s the best to eat, that’s the best thing of all.

Like a big hula hoop of a cinnamon roll, got sugar that’s purple and green and gold
Heat it in the microwave, eat it when it’s cold - people eat it so fast that it never gets old.
It’s January 6 when they start to make the food that I love and its called king cake!

You can fill it with cheese that’s creamy and sweet, you can fill it with jelly (Oh boy, let’s eat!)
Get a great big one or a little one too, mail ‘em to your friends like a lotta people do.
Get ‘em in a bag, get ‘em in a box, but no matter how you get ‘em people, king cake rocks.

It tastes real good when you put it in your mouth, but there’s somethin’ in the cake so you better watch out.
There’s a plastic baby that’s hiding inside, he looks like he’s drivin’ a car (Take a ride!)
Get the baby and it’s up to you to buy another cake (yeah you right, that’s true).

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

SUGAR CANE QUEEN

Prettiest girl I've ever seen - sugar cane, sugar cane, sugar cane queen.
Flowers in her hair, lights all around, shinin' on the bayou on the sugar cane town.

From Thibodaux to Baton Rouge no girl is sweeter this much is true.
So I'll pretend that I'll be a special friend - mon ami.

And when she passes, she smiles and waves her wand held high.
I stand beside the tree, smile and wave bye-bye, bye-bye.

Sugar cane fields wall to wall. Sugar cane fields ten feet tall.
Carnival comes to Cajun land. Carnival comes to Louisiane.

You'd think she'd notice me, but who am I? Some Cajun guy.
My friend he said to me, "Her name's Marie. From Vacherie."

Prettiest girl I've ever seen - sugar cane, sugar cane, sugar cane queen.
Flowers in her hair, lights all around, shinin' on the bayou on the sugar cane town.

Prettiest girl (sugar cane queen) I've ever seen (sugar cane queen)
Flowers in her hair (sugar cane queen) sweet Marie (sugar cane queen)
Marie (sugar cane queen) Marie (sugar cane queen)
Mon ami (sugar cane queen) Marie (sugar cane queen)

MARDI GRAS ELEMENTARY

Mardi Gras Elementary, that’s my school. Mardi Gras Elementary, sure is cool.

The first thing that we learn is how to play the drum.
Everybody listen up – he’s gonna give us some. PLAY THE DRUM NOW!

The next thing we learn to play is the tambourine.
We learn how to keep the beat and how to play it clean. TAMBOURINE NOW!

The next thing that we learn is how to play the bell.
We learn how to play it cool and how to play it well. PLAY THE BELL NOW!

The next thing that we learn is how to play the sticks
Anyone can play along, you know there are no tricks.  PLAY THE STICKS NOW!

When we play together, it sure sounds good.At Mardi Gras Elementary we knew it would.

PLAY TOGETHER NOW!

Mardi Gras Elementary, that’s my school.  Mardi Gras Elementary, sure is cool.
Mardi Gras Elementary, that’s my school.  Mardi Gras Elementary, sure is cool.

PURPLE, GREEN AND GOLD

Purple, green and gold, that’s my favorite colors, they are better than, any of the others.
If you ask me why I think they’re the prettiest I ever saw,
Purple, green and gold my friends are the colors of Mardi Gras.

Purple stands for Justice, that means being fair each day.
Green is there for faith, that means believin’ what you say.
Gold is for the power that we have when we are one,
When you see them all together, you’re about to have some fun.

Purple, green and gold, that’s my favorite colors, they are better than, any of the others.
If you ask me why I think they’re the prettiest I ever saw,
Purple, green and gold my friend are the colors of Mardi Gras.

I know that you have a color that you like, maybe yellow, maybe blue or red like a brand new bike.
It’s O.K. but I must say I cannot change my mind
‘Cause purple, green and gold to me are the best colors I can find.

Purple, green and gold...

STREETCAR ON MARDI GRAS

(lyrics coming soon)

GET BEHIND THE BIG UMBRELLA

If the sky is blue on Mardi Gras, just remember where you are.
If the sky is blue on Mardi Gras, bring your big umbrella.
If the sky is blue on Mardi Gras, just remember where you are.
If the sky is blue on Mardi Gras, bring your big umbrella.

A Mardi Gras umbrella's any color you choose. A Mardi Gras umbrella is a bumbershoot.
Tie it up with ribbons, big dubloons, long silver pearls, sing the tune.
Make it dance, make it twirl, make it swing and make it whirl,
Make if fly, make it sing.

Get behind the big umbrella, right behind the big umbrella,
Second line the big umbrella, get behind the big umbrella.

If the sky is gray on Mardi Gras, people come from near and far.
If the sky is gray on Mardi Gras, bring your big umbrella.
If the sky is gray on Mardi Gras, just remember what I say,
If the sky is gray on Mardi Gras, bring your big umbrella.

Get behind the big umbrella, right behind the big umbrella,
Second line the big umbrella, get behind the big umbrella.

Make it spin, make it groove, make it jump and make it move,
Lift it high, bring it low, bring your big umbrella.

Get behind the big umbrella, right behind the big umbrella,
Second line the big umbrella, get behind the big umbrella.

WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS IS A LITTLE BIT OF MARDI GRAS

What the world needs is a little bit of Mardi Gras
We can change the whole world if we tell ‘em what’s Carnival for.
Have a good time, let the music play, don’t cost a penny to spend the whole day,
Why would you stay away… from the Mardi Gras?

Gonna tell the President about the Mardi Gras, tell the whole Congress too and have ‘em pass a law.
On Mardi Gras day you can’t be alone, can’t go to work and can’t stay at home,
Everyone’s got to go… to the Mardi Gras.

Iko, iko, get on your bike-o
If it’s too far, you can drive your car.

What the world needs is a little bit of Mardi Gras
We can change the whole world if we tell ‘em what’s Carnival for.
Have a good time, let the music play, don’t cost a penny to spend the whole day,
Why would you stay away… from the Mardi Gras?

EVERY YEAR AT MARDI GRAS

Every year at Mardi Gras, the people come around from near and far.
Little bitty babies and their Maw-maws too, and here is what they come to do…
They come to catch some beads and they come to catch a spear,
They come to say, “Hey – Hey! Throw something here!”
They come to see the floats and to cheer the bands,
And all the people are clappin’ their hands.  Listen to the people clappin’ their hands.
I wanna here everybody clappin’ their hands.

Every year we like to meet and have a party in the street.
On Fat Tuesday, we’ll be there, with our ladders and folding chairs.

There is nothing anywhere, that you really can compare.
So bring your Nana and your Paw-Paw and join us here for the Mardi Gras.
Join us here for the Mardi Gras. Everybody come to the Mardi Gras.

GET BEHIND THE SECOND LINE

If you’ve got the blues today, you can chase those blues away
Just join in the second line and you’ll leave your blues behind
Come along, come along, come along and get behind the second line.

Here it comin’ down the street, can't you dig that happy beat?
People come from everywhere, steppin’ like they just don’t care.
Come along, come along, come along and get behind the second line.

You better get back cool cat. Don't you know where it's at?

Come and second line with me, see how happy you can be
When you do the second line, you will soon be feelin’ fine
Come along, come along, come along and get behind the second line.
